IRELAND PROJECT
In 2010, The Tallahassee Ballet will perform An Evening of Music and Dance entitled "From Bach to Broadway", at Chipola College in Marianna, Fl. The performance will be on Sunday afternoon, September 19th at 2:30pm.
From 1997 to 2002, The Tallahassee Ballet Artistic Director Joyce Straub and the Irish National Youth Ballet, under the artistic direction of Anne Campbell-Crawford, participated in a cultural exchange program. A chronological list of this exchange follows:
Anne Campbell-Crawford first visited The Tallahassee Ballet in 1997. During her stay she observed classes at The Tallahassee Ballet and the FSU School of Dance and taught master classes at The Tallahassee Ballet.
Joyce Straub visited Dublin, Ireland in the Spring of 1998. She observed classes and rehearsals at the Irish National Youth Ballet and taught variation and repertory classes.
Anne Campbell-Crawford visited Tallahassee in the Fall of 1998 to set a new work, "Tangazo," on three dancers from The Tallahassee Ballet. These dancers performed Ms. Campbell-Crawford's work as "guest artists" on the Irish National Youth Ballet's 1999 Spring Concert entitled "An Evening of Music and Dance from the Americas." The performance took place at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, Ireland.
Joyce Straub visited Dublin, Ireland in the Fall of 1998 to set an original work of choreography entitled "I Got Rhythm," on the dancers in the Irish National Youth Ballet. In addition to choreographing and teaching, Ms. Straub met with the dancers, their parents and members of the Professional Teacher's Association as a consultant for board development and fundraising. "I Got Rhythm" was performed as part of the Irish National Youth Ballet's 1999 Spring Concert and performed later in Cork and Limerick.
Kathleen Doherty, a member of the Irish National Youth Ballet, spent her "transition" year as a foreign exchange student in Tallahassee. She attended academic classes at Florida High, ballet and modern technique classes at Florida State University and performed with The Tallahassee Ballet. A Tallahassee Ballet family hosted Kathleen during her 10-month residency.
Anne Campbell-Crawford returned to Tallahassee in the Fall of 1999 to set a new work entitled “Irish Legend” on three dancers from The Tallahassee Ballet who performed at Trinity College and the National Concert Hall in March, 2000 with the Irish National Youth Ballet.
Twenty-two dancers and two staff members from the Irish National Youth Ballet visited Tallahassee for 10 days in April 2000. The Irish National Youth Ballet received a travel grant from the Ireland Department of Foreign Affairs for this trip. The dancers and staff stayed with host families from The Tallahassee Ballet. During their stay, the Irish National Youth Ballet presented a joint concert with The Tallahassee Ballet at the Tallahassee Little Theatre. Mayor Scott Maddox presented a "Letter of Proclamation" to both companies.
